Wedding Rings: Unscriptural Tradition

Origin

The wedding ring as a symbol of marriage or covenant is nowhere commanded or mentioned in Scripture—from Genesis to Revelation, not once. It is purely a human tradition, not an Elohim-given sign.

Personal Vow

Several dear friends and a cherished colleague—truly beautiful souls—have told me, “I never take my wedding ring off.” Their words give me pause. Now, let me speak freely, keeping a personal covenant is not sinful when it is honored, yet Scripture solemnly warns against making vows we may later be unable to keep (Ecclesiastes 5:4–5). The safest course, therefore, is to refrain from adding extra promises beyond what Elohim Himself requires.

Even a seemingly innocent declaration like “I will never remove this ring” can function as a self-imposed vow. For those who intended it as a solemn oath, breaking it (even for legitimate reasons) can bring real condemnation. For those who spoke casually without truly binding their conscience, it can still breed unnecessary false guilt—guilt that Elohim Himself does not place upon them. In either case, such private pledges risk burdening the heart where divine grace has granted freedom.

Worldly Burden

These traditions, even though innocent and heartfelt come from the world, not from Elohim. They add pressure on kind believers who are already striving to obey Elohim’s true commands while keeping up with man-made rules. Yeshua came to lift burdens, not to add them.

Biblical Sign

The only visible sign Scripture ever sets for a married woman is the head covering (1 Corinthians 11:5-6), showing she is under authority and taken in marriage. That was the ancient marker, not a ring.

Head Covering Origin

There is no direct command for head covering in the Old Testament that I can recall, yet Rebekah voluntarily covered her head when she first saw Isaac (Genesis 24:65). That act became the pattern most Jewish married women followed.

Paul’s Command

Paul, the Spirit-sent apostle to the once-Gentiles, made it a clear command: every woman praying or prophesying must have her head covered, declaring she is under authority and married. We honor this because Paul was a Jew who kept Elohim’s commands, and Yeshua Himself was Jewish.

Rechabite Example

Elohim praised the Rechabites for strictly obeying their father’s command never to drink wine (Jeremiah 35:6-14), saying to Israel, “Why can you not obey Me the way they obey their father?” We once-Gentiles should obey Paul’s head-covering command with the same faithfulness.

No Ceremony

At Cana, Yeshua attended a feast, not a ceremony. Jacob took Rebekah into the tent and she became his wife—no ring, no ritual, only the oath and consummation before Elohim.

Bride-Price Example

David paid a gruesome bride-price to satisfy Saul’s demand for Michal, but Elohim never required it. Again, no ceremony—just agreement followed by celebration.

Modern Invention

Today’s lavish ceremonies and the “three months’ salary” ring rule are pure worldly invention—expensive, burdensome, and unnecessary. They bind people to debt and tradition instead of freedom in Messiah.

Ring’s True Power

A ring symbolizes nothing in Elohim’s sight. No object forged by mere human hands can turn a pursuer away from a married person, nor can it stop a married man or woman from committing adultery. If a man cannot master his desires and remain faithful, no circle of gold will enforce holiness or restrain lust.

Modern statistics and daily headlines prove it: countless spouses commit adultery while wearing their wedding rings. In today’s perverse culture, the ring has even become a perverse trophy—some pursue married people precisely because the ring signals a challenge. The metal holds no spiritual authority to strengthen a weak heart against temptation. What alone can stop sin is the Spirit of the living Elohim working in power—not by weak human strength, but by His Spirit alone. Whether the finger is adorned or bare changes nothing before Elohim. What truly determines faithfulness is a person’s walk in Scripture and the depth of their living faith in Yeshua—not a piece of jewelry forged by human tradition.

Legalism Accusation

The cursed church keeps using the propaganda word “legalistic” whenever they see a true believer of Yeshua simply obeying the written commands of the Father and exposing deceptive, man-made traditions. Those who cry “legalism” neither know Elohim nor can lead anyone to Him. What we should be seeking is exactly what Yeshua came and died for: to remove every traditional burden that prevents a believer from walking and feeling truly free from oppressive, man-made hedges andlaws.

I myself once wore a ring when I knew little of Scripture. Now, understanding Elohim’s character and the call to come out of the world, I wear none. My walk is lighter, focused only on what Elohim commands.
